Managing My Diet; Event Review

 

“What you eat is what you are!”

I strongly believe that whatever we put into our bodies is manifested in our life in general and in our health in specific. Saturday’s event on ‘Managing Our Children’s Diet” was characterized with rich information, dynamic interaction, and solid convictions. Dr. Rachel Leiper presented how we, both adults and children, should fuel up our system with suitable and beneficial energy that is obtained in the food we consume.

One of the most rewarding things I got that day was when my son confirmed the fact that he now understands why I keep insisting that they all have healthy food choices. In fact, children love to hear the same facts told by the parents from other professional resources.

random picsI was delighted to watch the attentiveness and the smart questions the children came up with. Both moms and children were all involved and concerned about adapting a healthy lifestyle. At the same time, Dr. Leiper soothed our apprehensions by explaining that once we consume the healthy nutrients needed by our bodies, it is OK to have some pleasures – but in moderation of course.

When we actually think and take our time in thinking of what we are eating, we in fact help our bodies overcome certain cravings and direct our needs towards more healthy eating habits.

To make things more tangible for the attending moms and children, Dr. Leiper presented the amounts of fat and sugars found in certain foods which people usually enjoy. Honestly, we were all shocked by how much nasty fat and calories hide inside small quantities of cookies, nachos and cheese, and other tasty snacks.

She also asked the children to draw their favourite plate by trying to add any other nutrition to make it nutritious. The children were all enthusiastic about discussing their choices and talking about it with her.

Another important factor that Dr. Leiper insisted on was the amounts of food people consume. Here, she provided us with a chart whereby people can measure the quantity of food they consume based on the size of their palms – as shown in the image below. For example, a child’s palm is much smaller than that of an adult. Hence, the amount that a child should ingest should be less as well.

When the participating children were asked about the lesson they learned from the seminar, some gave the following answers:

“We have to eat more vegetables and less junk food.”

“Today, I learned how to balance my diet.”

“I will always remember to have fruits and vegetables in my healthy plate.”

“Never watch TV while eating or else you will never enjoy and feel the taste.”

“Eating healthy = a better life.”

“I was shocked when I saw the containers of the amount of fat and sugar found in some of the foods that we eat! It will make me think twice next time I decide to have some nachos.”

“I need to concentrate more on fruits and vegetables. Eat portions as the size of my palm. Drink more water and do physical activity.”

“I learned that healthy eating isn’t about what how much you eat from it, it is what you eat.”

“We can eat everything we crave for, but in smaller portions.”

“Today, the new thing that I learned was that our body like cars and electronics needs fuel. Healthy fuel. We can also eat junk food, but with moderation.Thank you for today’s seminar!!!”

I am so proud of all the children who attended. Their mere presence was a notable decision of understanding why healthy eating habits are important in their lives.

We ended the seminar by distributing certificates to all the children and a raffle draw that included many amazing gifts and vouchers.

What Sleeps with You in Bed

There is nothing more relaxing than sleeping in a comfortable and fresh bed. We tend to think that our beds are one of the cleanest household items. Moreover, we tend to believe that washing and changing the bed sheets on a frequent basis keeps germs, dusts mites, and dead skin out of our way.

Long ago our smart ancestors, at the end of the winter season, used to remove all the mattresses and leave them exposed to direct sun light. Furthermore, they would remove all the interiors of the mattress, subject them to sunshine, and even hit them with special thin twigs. They did not do those rituals for the sake of filling up their time. In fact, they were reserving their health by cleaning their own beds. I do not know if it is because we do not have time or because we are kind of lazy, but our generation tends to disregard such issues. We sleep on ‘filthy’ mattresses unable to understand why we and our children suffer from asthma, eczema, fatigue, headaches, and other health issues.

Thanks to healthyhomeme and their professional team, we can now be blessed with a healthy sleeping environment. I was one of those lucky moms who was able to experience their amazing work. ‘From Your Valentine’

Like any social event, media has its influence in ways where such occasions are used and abused. I always love to dig into the story of any occasion; a recipe, a specific outcome, or any kind of social and ritual occurrence.

Valentine’s Day is not different from any of those occurrences which I take the advantage and teach my children about true Love. After all, there are many different meanings behind it. For example, telling your child, “I love you,” and saying “I love chocolate,” carries a different kind of love.

It is said that there are seven kinds of love. Personally, I find that the Agape Love or the Divine Love – is the noblest, the purest of all. In fact, it is one of the hardest to be genuinely attained but the most exquisite if felt for a few seconds. Once you know Love you acquire all knowledge as Shams Tabriz puts it;

Nowadays, what we practice on Valentines is buying our loved ones flowers, chocolate, and sometimes jewellery. Children enjoy crafting cards for their parents. Some even hold Valentine’s Day parties and celebrate with friends. Whatever, a person does it is essential to remember the essence of love as without Love there is no life.

Symbolizing abstract feelings to children is essential. Here comes the part which I enjoy as we learn together to love everything about simply being. It starts with a letter or a card and could reach endless oceans of serenity and peace. That is how we can attain the true qualities of Love.

  • The roots of Valentine go back to Ancient Roman Fertility Festival held in mid-February.
  • The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower Of London.

Pancake Day – Shrove Tuesday

It is interesting to recognize how many remarkable stories are carried along with various types of food. Pancakes are no different from those nutritious foods that have been as ancient as any man can remember.

We always enjoy baking pancakes, and our children simply love them. Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday is a traditional day that is celebrated 40 days before Easter where people have their sins “shriven” – released from their sins – once they confess. The reason pancakes were chosen was because they contain ingredients that were forbidden during Lent. Moreover, the implication of the ingredients used symbolizes four points of significance at this time of the year:

Eggs – Creation

Flour – The staff of life

Salt – Wholesomeness

Milk – Purity

This weekend I tried new pancake recipes and the kiddos simply loved them.

Banana Almond Pancakes:

½ a ripe smashed banana

2 eggs

Vanilla essence

2 teaspoons sugar

2 teaspoons cooking oil

1 cup of milk

¾ cup of almond flour

½ cup flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

Just mix all the ingredients in a blender.

We also added blue berries and chocolate chips while cooking them.

Serve with honey, maple syrup or even tahini mixed with honey; mouth-watering!

The boys enjoyed designing their own pancakes using some berries and pecans.

Sweet Potatoes Pancakes:

½ a cup of smashed cooked sweet potatoes

2 eggs

½ a teaspoon cinnamon

½ a teaspoon ginger

Pinch of Salt

Pinch of all spice

These are excellent and obviously healthy served with some honey, or maple syrup. The twins ended up licking their fingers afterwards.

We can always modify our recipes to guarantee the fact of providing our children with healthy eating habits. It all starts at home and moves out to the outside world. Enjoy!

Zucchini Bread

I don’t know about you, but I am a great fan of any kind of vegetable and especially zucchinis. In fact, I can eat them raw with or without a dip on the side.
You know by now that I enjoy baking tasty and easy recipes. This one is not different from the others that I have shared here on the blog.

Ingredients:

4 eggs
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 a teaspoon ginger powder
Pinch of salt
1/2 a teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon fresh thyme or a handful of basil
1/3 cup of olive oil
1/2 cup of milk
4 grated zucchinis
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
Grated mix of different types of cheese like emmental, cheddar, or goat cheese. I always love mixing different types of cheeses.

Method:

Beat the eggs along with the spices. Add the oil and continue mixing. Add the milk. Fold in the shredded zucchini. Add the flour. Mix gently and pour all ingredients in a pan which I already brushed with teheneh. Fold in the cheese.
Bake in a preheated oven until an inserted wooden stick comes out dry.
